Student gets Suspended for Answering Call From Dad in Iraq

A Texas sergeant and his son recently found themselves separated not only by an eight-hour time difference, several bodies of water, hundreds of miles and a war, but by a high school official who suspended the boy for answering his dad’s call during class.

This is a shame. If I were teaching at that school I’d have to say something to my department chair and principal. This kind of punishment and message cannot stand. We cannot always be inflexible. It’s the idea that we can set absolute standards in a relative world that gets us into this trouble in the first place. I know sometimes Fox’s campaigns for the people are frivolous propaganda for a certain issue that always ends up on the ballot in the following election, but this time I hope they get enough attention on this to bring it back home for that school. This kid shouldn’t be punished, that school should be thanking his dad.
